Fundamentals of Backpacking
WHY SHOULD I BACKPACK?
This section of "The Crew"
website contains information which
pertains to ALL backpackers, whether you
are a Venture Scout, a Hiking Club, or a
family planning your backpacking
adventure.
Almost everyone, sooner or later, feels
the need to get away from the fast pace of
the busy lives we lead today . . . maybe
for a weekend, maybe for a week, maybe
longer. Backpacking is a way of going
anywhere, anytime. Backpacking is the
cheapest and the only way to get to some
places. I love the "mountaintop
experience" that accompanies every
backpack adventure. I feel closer to God
and all His creation when I am on the
trail. The view from the top of a mountain
is an incredible experience. Even the view
from the top of the fire tower at Big Hill
Pond, TN (elevation 573 feet) is an
incredible experience. But you have to
walk to get there.
We have more leisure time now than ever
before. Wilderness areas are easier than
ever to get to via interstates and
parkways. Backpack equipment is lighter
and more durable than ever. Supermarkets
are packed with dehydrated and
freeze-dried foods which are perfect for
backpacking. As we spend time in the
uncrowded solitude of the wilderness we
become acutely aware of how fragile our
environment is and how important it is for
us to be good stewards of it.
Backpacking gives you a sense of
accomplishment and personal satisfaction.
Can you spend the night away from the
comforts of home? Can you build a campfire
(even in the rain)? Will you be able to
sleep on the ground? What if a large
animal comes into camp, or crosses your
trail! What if you get lost! It's only
natural to worry about things you are
unsure of. But the fact is, the biggest
danger you face in backpacking is driving
to the trailhead. If you keep your trip
simple, prepare properly, and use common
sense you will have an enjoyable
experience every time. ALWAYS LEAVE THE
TRAIL AND YOUR CAMPSITES IN BETTER
CONDITION THAN YOU FOUND THEM!
